LAST TIME OUT
• USD hammered out a season-high 14 hits on Tuesday evening (April 1) but dropped a tough 16-7 decision to No. 12 UC Irvine (22-5, 11-1 Big West) in a midweek matchup at Anteater Ballpark.
LAST WEEKEND
• The Toreros won their series against WCC foe Pepperdine last weekend (March 28-30) by taking two of three from the Waves at Fowler Park.
• San Diego dropped a tough 6-5 decision in the series opener on Friday night before dominating in a 10-0 run-rule victory in seven innings in game two on Saturday. The Sunday finale was knotted 2-2 in the seventh inning before both
Jack Gurevitch and
Rex Watson homered to push USD in front for good.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST UCLA
• The Toreros are 8-19 against the Bruins all-time but have won two of their last four matchups with UCLA.
• San Diego and UCLA last met on March 4, 2017, when USD beat the Bruins 3-1 in 12 innings at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
• A pair of future Major-Leaguers contributed to the victory for the Toreros that day, with Riley Adams (currently with the Washington Nationals) tying the game with a ninth-inning RBI single after then-freshman left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy (currently with the Boston Red Sox) allowed just one run on three hits across six innings in his first college start.
WEATHER PERMITTING…
• San Diego and UCLA were scheduled to play one other in both 2023 and 2024, but both games were canceled due to inclement weather.
TOUGH COMPETITION
• This weekend's action will mark the Toreros' 10th, 11th, and 12th games against a Top-25 team this season.
• San Diego's prior matchups with ranked opponents in 2025 include hosting No. 23 TCU for four games, traveling to Corvallis for a three-game series at No. 8 Oregon State, and midweek matchups at No. 16 UC Santa Barbara and No. 12 UC Irvine.
• USD's non-conference strength of schedule ranks 53rd nationally.
SMITH'S STREAK
• Senior left-handed pitcher/designated hitter/outfielder
Austin Smith enters Friday night's action on a 19-game hit streak that dates back to March 1 and includes nine multi-hit performances.
• He is 28-for-76 (.368) during this hit streak with 10 doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 18 RBIs.
• Smith's first-inning single on Tuesday at UC Irvine pushed him past Hunter Mercado-Hood's 2018 streak, which spanned 18 games.
• The longest hit streak in USD baseball history is 31 games, achieved by Josh Harris in 2000; research on historical Torero hit streaks prior to 2021 is ongoing.
GUREVITCH STAYS HOT
• Junior infielder
Jack Gurevitch batted .579 (11-for-19) in his last four games, scoring seven runs, smashing two home runs, and driving in six runs while drawing two walks.
• He leads USD with a .402 (43-for-107) batting average in 2025 and is pacing the team with six home runs, 22 RBIs, and 72 total bases. His 14 walks this season rank third on the San Diego roster.
• In January, Gurevitch was selected to the 2025 WCC Preseason Team and was named the 2025 Perfect Game WCC Preseason Player of the Year.
PATIENCE PAYS OFF
• Sophomore utility player
Nico Libed's 17 walks this season are the most of any Torero, and are tied for fifth in the WCC.
A JACK OF ALL TRADES
•
Nico Libed has started 20 games this season at four different positions, including seven at catcher, six at second base, ten in left field, and one as USD's designated hitter.
TRIPLE THREAT
• Seven different Toreros (
Isaiah Lane,
Jack Gurevitch,
Austin Smith,
Nico Libed,
Gabe D'Arcy,
Jayden Lobliner, and
Rex Watson) have notched a triple in 2025.
• Lane (two) is the only USD player (and just one of three players in the WCC) with more than one.
• San Diego's eight total triples through 28 games this season are the second-most in the WCC (LMU, 11), and are just one shy of the final tally of nine triples the Torero achieved across 56 games in 2024.
LIFE IN THE FAST LANE
•
Isaiah Lane, who is hitting .314 (27-for-86) overall so far this season with four home runs and 12 RBIs, has recorded eight multi-hit games in 2025 and has hit safely in 19 of his first 24 games as a Torero.
• On March 1, he launched two solo homers against Cal State Bakersfield at Fowler Park. His three multi-RBI games this season are tied with
Nico Libed for USD's team-high.
• A native of nearby Chula Vista, California and a graduate of Eastlake High School, Lane joined USD as a transfer after spending his freshman year at Oklahoma.
OUCH!
• Freshman outfielder
Rex Watson has been hit by ten pitches across 26 games so far in 2025, which is the most of any Torero and is tied for the fourth-most HBPs among all WCC players.
• In total, San Diego has been hit by 51 pitches this season.
AUSTIN SMITH NAMED JOHN OLERUD TWO-WAY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•
Austin Smith has been named the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week for April 1, 2025, the College Baseball Foundation announced on Tuesday afternoon.
• Smith, who is the first multiple-time winner of the John Olreud Award this season, appeared both on the mound and in the batter's box to help lead San Diego to a series

FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
FRIDAY: Senior left-hander

• Smith last pitched on March 28 versus Pepperdine, throwing five innings while allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits, walking four, and striking out six batters.
A two-way player who hits for himself, Smith helped his own cause by adding two hits (including a solo home run) that night.
• Smith is coming off a historic 2024 season for USD that saw him earn an All-WCC First Team nod, a WCC All-Tournament Team selection, an ABCA/Rawlings/NCBWA NCAA Division I Third Team All-American selection, an ABCA All-West Region First Team selection, a Finalist designation for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, a Semifinalist honor for the Dick Howser Trophy, and recognition as a San Diego Sports Association Amateur Star of the Year.
• This offseason he was named to the 2025 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, a 2025 D1Baseball Preseason Second Team All-American, the 2025 D1Baseball Preseason WCC Player of the Year, and to the 2025 WCC Baseball Preseason Team.
• Smith was one of two USD pitchers to reach seven wins in 2024, as the San Diego native and Granite Hills High School alum went a perfect 7-0 with a 3.49 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP across 17 total appearances and nine starts.
• He recorded three saves in 56.2 total innings pitched (third most among USD players in 2024) while notching 49 strikeouts.
• Smith was one of two Toreros in 2024 to throw eight total innings in a single game without allowing a run (April 21 at Pepperdine).
• In addition to dominating on the mound, he also batted in every game of the 2024 season for the Toreros, slashing .314/.429/.471 with 11 doubles, seven home runs, 39 RBIs, 31 walks, 13 hit-by-pitches, and three stolen bases.
• On February 25, 2024 against Arizona, he recorded a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning, before making his way to the mound from left field to earn a four-out save.
SATURDAY: Redshirt freshman RHP
Cal Scolari (1-2, 4.30 ERA) is scheduled to start for San Diego in game two versus the Bruins.
• Scolari last pitched on Sunday, March 30 in game three against Pepperdine, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit, walking none, and striking out one.
• He started each of San Diego's first four Friday contests in 2025 before pitching in the Toreros' last three Sunday afternoon matchups. After starting on Saturday he will have pitched in all three weekend spots for the Toreros this season.
• He shined in his collegiate debut in USD's season opener vs No. 23 TCU on February 14, striking out nine through five one-hit shutout innings.
• Scolari was inactive for the entirety of his true freshman year at USD and his final year of high school while recovering from an arm injury. He attended Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in Reno, Nevada, where he last pitched as a junior, posting a 2.50 ERA across 50.1 innings on the mound.
• As a high school sophomore, he earned Second Team All-Region honors, followed by First Team All-Region honors as a junior
• Scolari was ranked the No. 7 player in Nevada and was one of Collegiate Baseball Newspapers' Top High-School Players list in 2023.
