Toreros Drop Series Finale to Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO– Wrapping up the team's first weekend of West Coast Conference play, the San Diego softball team (16-21, 0-3 WCC) came up short against Santa Clara (23-14, 3-0 WCC) by a 10-1 final score on Sunday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The visiting Broncos got off to a fast start on Sunday afternoon as they scored five runs in the top of the first inning.
  • Santa Clara added four more to their total in their half of the second as they grabbed a 9-0 lead through the first two innings of play .
  • USD began to settle in during the third inning as McKenna Braegelmann retired the Broncos in order to help set up the Torero offense.
  • In the bottom of the third, Emma Giaime got the offense going as she worked a lead off walk and Kaitlyn Wynia reached on an error but San Diego couldn't put a run on the board through the first three innings.
  • Santa Clara added one more run to their total in the fourth as they grew their lead to 10-0.
  • Responding with the bats in the bottom half of the inning, Taylor Johnson drove a double off the wall in right center field and then came around to score after Shawnese Hogue-Lacy laid down a great bunt and the ball was thrown away by the Bronco third baseman allowing Johnson to score making it a 10-1 game.
  • Both teams were held off the board in the fifth inning as Santa Clara picked up a 10-1 run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Braegelmann had a great performance in relief for the Toreros as she threw four innings and allowed just a pair of runs while striking out four Bronco hitters on Sunday afternoon.
  • Johnson went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored marking the first San Diego run at the new Reggie Smith Softball Complex.
