San Diego Falls in Game Two at Santa Clara

Toreros strike first before Broncos score 10 unanswered runs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Diego was upended in the middle game of the three game series at Santa Clara, losing 10-1 at Stephen Schott Stadium.

USD (21-28, 15-5 WCC) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double off the bat of Austin Smith, scoring Isaiah Lane

Then the Toreros' bats went silent the rest of the game as the Broncos (20-26, 7-13 WCC) bats came alive with 10 unanswered runs.

Santa Clara responded in the first with a two-run home run. The Broncos then added one in the fourth, three in the fifth and fourth and seventh to set up a rubber game Sunday.

Porter Rovin got the start for head coach Brock Ungricht. He went 3.1 innings, allowing three runs, six hits and two walks while striking out three. Then the bullpen corps of Tristan LaMaison, Jaime Robertson, Jack Giordano and Aidan Gonzalez finished the game.

NOTABLE
  • Aden Howard paced the Toreros offense, going 2-for-4 and having half of the team's hits. It is his fourth multi-hit performance in the last six games.
  • USD still has a wide margin in the series history. Despite the loss, the Toreros hold a 46-27 lifetime record against the Broncos, which dates back to 2004.
  • However, San Diego falls to 25-7 playing at Santa Clara all-time.
