Scolari and Lobliner Lead the Way in Friday Night Win at SCU

Six strong innings from Scolari, three RBIs from Lobliner help Toreros kick off key WCC series with 7-4 victory over Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – San Diego Baseball's number two, three and four hitters went a combined 8-for-14 Friday night against Santa Clara to fuel a 7-4 victory on the road at Stephen Schott Stadium to open a three-game series.

Isaiah Lane went 3-for-5 with an RBI double and a run scored, Austin Smith went 2-for-5 and two runs scored, and Jayden Lobliner - in the clean up spot - went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to extend the Toreros' winning streak in West Coast Conference games to five.

USD (21-27, 15-4 WCC) scored two of its three runs in the fourth on wild pitches as all three runs scored in the inning were unearned due to a Santa Clara (19-26, 6-13 WCC) miscue.

Then in the next inning, the Toreros tacked on three more runs on an RBI double from Lane and highlighted by Lobliner's two-run home run to extend USD's lead to 6-1.

On the hill, Cal Scolari, the reigning WCC Pitcher of the Week, got the start for Brock Ungricht. He threw six innings, while scattering two runs, three hits and three walks while striking out eight despite hitting four batters.

In his first inning of work he loaded the bases with no outs and limited the damage to just one run, courtesy of a double play followed by a strikeout. He did all of that without allowing a hit, which his first given up did not come until the fourth inning.

After Santa Clara scored once in the sixth, the Toreros got the run back in the eighth as Lobliner hit an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Smith, who singled to begin the frame.

However, the Bulldogs answered back immediately with a two-run home run off Andrew Mosiello to make it a 7-4 lead for the Toreros heading into the ninth.

Mosiello was able to bounce back in the ninth as worked around a one-out hit by pitch, leading to a game-ending double play.
