San Diego Sweeps San Francisco With "Balk-Off" Win

Toreros lose four-run lead in the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon before emerging victorious after a walk-off balk

SAN DIEGO – The first-place Toreros needed every bit of magic they could get on Sunday against San Francisco at Fowler Park among spurts of rain and heavy mist in the season finale as USD tried to bring out the brooms.

Despite giving up a four-run lead to the Dons in the top of the ninth inning, San Diego loaded the bases on a walk from Connor Meidroth and hit by pitches to Jack Gurevitch and Isaiah Lane, all with two outs.

After a Dons' mound visit and before a pitch was thrown, a balk was called, leading to Meidroth coming home to score from third base, giving the Toreros a 9-8 walk-off win to complete the sweep against San Francisco.

Prior to the ninth inning, San Diego's runs came in bunches.

USD (20-26, 14-4 West Coast Conference) scored three in the second behind a two-run triple by Aden Howard, scoring Nico Libed and AJ Beltre. Moments later, Meidroth hit an RBI single to give San Diego an early 3-0 lead.

After San Francisco (20-28, 7-14 WCC) scored once in the top of the third, the Toreros scored three in the fourth, highlighted by Gurevitch's team-leading 12th home run of the season that stayed just inside the left field foul pole. Then, Jayden Lobliner recorded an RBI double to cap off a second three-run frame.

San Diego got some momentum in the seventh after Hayden Cody entered with one out in the seventh and the bases loaded. The Torero graduate student worked out of the jam by inducing a fly out to right and a popup in foul territory leaving the bases full of Dons.

The Toreros' offense responded as Meidroth delivered once again in the seventh with a one-out, two-run double that one-hopped the left center field wall, scoring Beltre and Howard.

Dallin Harrison got the start for Brock Ungricht. The USD sophomore threw career-high four innings and allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout, while scattering five walks.

Then, Jamie Robertson took the fifth and sixth innings. He allowed a two-run home run in the sixth for his only damage as he surrendered three hits without walking a batter. That was followed by Fernando Palencia, who allowed one run and set up the bases loaded situation with one out in the seventh.

Although Cody allowed the four runs in the ninth, it set up the dramatics for USD's second walk-off win of the season.
