SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Las Toreras kept their longest unbeaten start to a season in program history with a 0-0 draw in the WCC opener against Pacific on Wednesday night in Torero Stadium on Hispanic Heritage Night.
"We're never satisfied with a draw, but happy to extend our unbeaten streak," head coach Greg LaPorte said. "We defended with discipline and kept a clean sheet, created enough to win it, their GK denied an absolute highlight-reel shot from Tamia [Graham]. Now it's about sharpening that final piece in the attack and turning performances like this into three points."
The USD women's soccer side had the better of the chances in the match, but the referee denied multiple potential Pacific handballs, one that could have been a penalty in the 89th minute. LaPorte's side remains one of less than a dozen teams left in the nation to be undefeated thus far in 2025.
San Diego outshot Pacific eight shots to four, with junior forward Tamia Graham and newly appointed No. 77 Amanda Anders, a freshman forward, having USD's best chances. As a whole, the team led the game in possession throughout the 90 minutes but couldn't find the back of the net.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chloe Walls notched her third career clean sheet as she made just her fifth career start, making three saves on the night, which brings her save percentage up to 85.7% on the season.
How it Happened
LaPorte's starting lineup saw four changes from last Sunday's victory against Cal Baptist. The Toreros' redshirt junior No.10 Daniella Guerrero returned to the starting lineup. Both senior defender Emma Gonzalez and senior mid Kylie Smith were also new faces to the starting XI from a game ago and played the entire match.
Midway through the first half, sophomore defender Ella Callanan, on a breakaway, chipped a shot that glanced off the goalkeeper outside the 18-yard box in a bang-bang play which the referees ultimately decided was not a handball.
The second half was when the offense started to break out, as it was in the 78th minute that the team registered its first shot on target. Graham had the biggest chance for San Diego when in the 87th minute, after a behind-the-back touch to move to her right foot, rifled in a shot to the bottom right corner which forced a save from the Tigers' goalkeeper.
The full-time whistle drew the game to a close as a scoreless draw after a long VAR decision in the 89th minute that deemed no handball, no penalty for USD.
