Toreros Hold Pilots to .047 Hitting in Sweep at Portland

San Diego hits .453 and finishes its Pacific Northwest swing 2-0 behind Kierstyn Barton's match-high 12 kills

PORTLAND, Ore. — Two days after sweeping Seattle U, San Diego volleyball did the same at Portland, winning 25-17, 25-10, 25-11 on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center.

The Toreros (9-8, 4-3 WCC) hit .453, their best mark in WCC play this season, and held Portland (10-6, 3-4 WCC) to .047, the lowest by any San Diego opponent in 2026. The Pilots had come in hitting .278, tops in the West Coast Conference and 17th in the nation.

Portland led 7-4 early in the first set and went back in front 10-9 on a San Diego service error. Nemo Beach's kill tied it and started a 12-2 run, and after her ace on the next point, San Diego never trailed again.

Lauren Lynch later served five straight points for an 18-11 lead, two of them on Kierstyn Barton kills and the last on a Meghan Scholz block. Barton finished the set with eight of the Toreros' 11 kills, Scholz was in on all five of their blocks and Portland's nine attack errors matched its kill total.

Every one of Portland's 10 serves in the second set ended with a San Diego point, and the Toreros hit .542 with 13 kills and no errors. Beach put down five kills on five swings, and Kylie Munday served the set's final four points, finishing it with an ace.

An 11-1 run turned San Diego's 5-3 lead into 16-4 in the third set. Munday served four straight points in the run, the third an ace, and Beach later served five in a row. BayLea Sparks had four kills on four swings in the set, and the Toreros hit .583 with 15 kills and one error.

Barton led all players with 12 kills and 13.5 points, hitting .524 with one error on 21 swings. Scholz had six kills, two aces and a match-high seven blocks, three of them solo, for 13.0 points, and Beach added nine kills on .667 hitting with two aces.

Sparks had eight kills on nine error-free swings, Munday finished with 30 assists, two aces and three block assists, and Lynch had a team-high 10 digs.

The Toreros served a season-high nine aces, and Portland, which came in second in the WCC in aces per set, managed one. That ace, on the second point of the match, accounted for San Diego's only reception error, and Ryann Knuth passed 15-for-15 in serve receive for the second straight match.

Vanessa Haddock and Kalaweloilehua Chock had eight kills apiece for Portland, Taina Kaauwai added seven on nine swings and Havannah Hoeft had 19 assists and 10 digs.

The win was San Diego's 19th straight against Portland and its 15th sweep in that stretch, and the Toreros lead the all-time series 70-9.
