ST. LOUIS — CJ Castille was named the Pioneer Football League's Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday, the league announced, after the sophomore cornerback intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown in San Diego's 63-14 win over Davidson.
The interceptions were the first two of Castille's career, and both turned into points Saturday at Torero Stadium. He made the first on the opening play of the second quarter, picking off a pass at the Davidson 38 and returning it 10 yards, and the Toreros scored two plays later to go ahead 28-0. He got the second early in the fourth quarter, intercepting a hurried throw at the Davidson 42 and taking it back 42 yards for a touchdown with 10:11 to play. He finished with 52 interception return yards and added a solo tackle.
Castille's two interceptions were half of the four San Diego (2-3, 1-1 PFL) collected on the afternoon, three more than the Toreros had through their first four games. The defense finished with five takeaways, the Toreros scored 28 points off them, and Davidson (2-4, 0-2 PFL) was held to 210 total yards, the fewest by a USD opponent this season.
A sophomore from Eastvale, California, Castille attended Centennial High School and appeared in 11 games as a freshman in 2025. The honor is the first of his career, and he is the second Torero to earn a PFL weekly award this season, joining kicker Emiliano Salazar, who was named Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 20.
