Homestand Concludes With Pivotal Conference Clashes

Toreros will host WCC rivals Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine this weekend at the Jenny Craig Pavilion

SAN DIEGO — The Toreros (7-6, 2-1 WCC) host the West Coast Conference's top two teams this week at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, with LMU (13-2, 4-0 WCC) visiting on Thursday night and Pepperdine (11-4, 3-1 WCC) on Saturday afternoon. San Diego enters off back-to-back league sweeps and went 4-0 against the Lions and Waves on the way to last season's WCC title.

First serve is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, and noon on Saturday, Oct. 10. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+, with Torero broadcaster Braden Surprenant on the play-by-play call.

Live statistics will be available on StatBroadcast.

WHAT'S AT STAKE: THE WCC'S TOP TWO COME TO THE JCP
• San Diego (7-6, 2-1 WCC) closes its seven-match homestand against the top of the West Coast Conference standings. LMU (13-2, 4-0 WCC), the only team without a league loss, visits Thursday on a six-match winning streak, and Pepperdine (11-4, 3-1 WCC), tied with Saint Mary's for second, follows Saturday.

• The Toreros are tied with Portland for fourth, a game and a half behind LMU and a half-game behind Pepperdine and Saint Mary's. A win Thursday would hand the Lions their first conference loss and pull San Diego even with them in the loss column. USD's lone league loss came in five sets against Saint Mary's on Sept. 24.

• It's also San Diego's first look at the teams picked second (Pepperdine) and third (LMU) behind it in the WCC preseason coaches poll.

• Last season, USD went 4-0 against LMU and Pepperdine on the way to an 18-0 WCC record, winning 12 of 15 sets, and clinched the conference title with a Nov. 20 sweep of the Waves at the JCP. Seven players from those four matches are back.

• After Saturday, San Diego plays four straight road matches and doesn't return to the JCP until Oct. 29. The rematches with Pepperdine (Nov. 12) and LMU (Nov. 14) come back-to-back on the road.

LAST TIME OUT: SAN DIEGO PUSHES PAST DENVER FOR SECOND STRAIGHT SWEEP AT THE JCP
• San Diego swept Denver 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 on Oct. 3 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion for its second straight WCC sweep, in the programs' first meeting as West Coast Conference opponents.

• The Toreros hit .400 (49-11-95), their second-best mark of the season behind .457 against Arizona, and held a Denver team that came in leading the WCC in kills per set to 27 kills and .155 hitting. San Diego served six aces and was charged with one reception error in 49 serve-receive attempts; Denver was charged with six, one for each Torero ace.

• San Diego never trailed in the first set and held the Pioneers to .000 hitting, with seven kills against seven errors. Up 6-5, the Toreros scored five straight — a Ryann Knuth kill, then four points on Kierstyn Barton's serve, two of them aces — to force a timeout at 11-5. All five of USD's blocks came in the set, with Meghan Scholz in on four, and Belle Groomes checked in at 24-14 and ended it with an ace.

• After five ties to open the second set, an 8-2 burst ended with three straight points on Kylie Munday's serve, the first an ace, and Groomes later served three in a row for a 19-11 lead. San Diego hit .531 in the set (20-3-32), and Nemo Beach had five kills on seven error-free swings before serving the final two points, starting with an ace.

• Denver scored five straight to turn a 12-10 deficit into a 15-12 lead in the third and still led 17-15 before San Diego ran off four in a row, the last three with Munday serving. Barton's kill capped the run for a 19-17 lead, and she added kills at 20-18 and 22-20. Knuth made it 23-21, and after the Pioneers got within 24-23, Beach ended the match with a kill off a Munday set.

• Knuth led all players with 13 kills and 13.5 points on .478 hitting (13-2-23) and added six digs. Beach had 11 kills on .400 hitting and passed all 16 serves she received, Scholz hit .583 with eight kills and four block assists, and Barton added nine kills, eight digs and two aces. Munday handed out 33 assists, and Lauren Lynch led USD with 11 digs.

LAUREN LYNCH NAMED WCC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
