Toreros Defeat Weber State in Home Opener

San Diego scores go-ahead run in in sixth, secures 4-3 victory over Wildcats

SAN DIEGO — In its first game within the confines of Reggie Smith Softball Complex of 2026, San Diego softball (4-2, 0-0 WCC) claimed a gritty 4-3 victory over Weber State (0-6, 0-0 Big Sky) to kick off the first of 15 total games this weekend at USD as part of the USD/UCSD Co-Host Tournament.

After neither team scored in the opening inning of play, the Toreros were the first strike in the second frame when Kaylee Oh plated Michelle Delgado — who had reached on a lead-off triple to begin the inning — with an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0. A single from Carly Ruiz then advanced Oh to third, before she was sent home by an RBI single up the middle from Kaitlyn Wynia, pushing the Torero lead to 2-0 after the opening two frames.

The Wildcats responded promptly in the top of the third inning with a two-RBI double to knot the game up at two runs a piece, before they took the lead in the following frame with a passed ball that scored a run giving WSU a 3-2 lead.

Shawnese Hogue-Lacy tied the game back up in the bottom of the fourth by sending an RBI single up the middle to score Mallory Axline, leveling the game once again with three innings left to play.

A one-out single from Ruiz got a base-runner on for the Toreros to start the sixth, before a double from Wynia put runners on second and third with one out. That was enough for Hailey Mulligan to put the ball in the air and score Ruiz from third with an RBI sacrifice fly to take a one run lead at 4-3.

One run was all Charlie Johnson needed in the circle to finish out the game, as she threw a one-two-three inning in the top of the seventh to cap off her night that finished with 4.2 innings in relief, giving up no earned runs on just four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
