First Inning Rally Secures Victory for San Diego on Saturday

Toreros secure 6-3 victory over Ospreys at the GCU Softball Stadium as part of Purple Classic

PHOENIX — Six strong innings from Charlie Johnson and a three RBI game from Taylor Johnson pushed San Diego softball (7-7, 0-0 WCC) to a 6-3 victory over North Florida (13-5, 0-0 ASUN) on Saturday afternoon, allowing the Toreros to claim a second straight victory as they end their weekend at the Purple Classic at the GCU Softball Stadium.

The Toreros started off hot with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first inning from Kaitlyn Wynia and Shawnese Hogue-Lacy, as well as a fielder's choice from Michelle Delgado to allow both runners to advance to second and third. Taylor Johnson then knocked a two-RBI double to deep right field driving in both Wynia and Hogue-Lacy to give her team an early 2-0 lead.

Hailey Mulligan capped off the hot start in the first inning with an RBI double of her own, driving in Taylor Johnson with a rope down the left field line that made it 3-0 to finish the frame.

Taylor Johnson picked up right where she left off in the third inning with another RBI hit that plated Hogue-Lacy, giving the Toreros a four run lead. Mallory Axline then pushed the advantage to five runs later in the inning with an RBI fielder's choice that sent home Delgado — who had reached on a double down the left field line earlier in the inning — giving San Diego a 5-0 lead at the end of the third inning.

The Ospreys responded with their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning to make it 5-1, before the Toreros regained their five-run lead at 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth frame with an RBI single from Kaylee Oh that scored Seleny Chavez.

Charlie Johnson, who got the start in the circle for the Toreros, threw a strong six innings to the red hot Osprey lineup, finishing her afternoon with one strikeout, surrendering just one run on six hits to earn the win.

North Florida scored two runs in the top of the seventh that cut the San Diego lead to three runs at 6-3, but got no closer.

The Toreros will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Riverside, California, for a mid-week non-conference game with the Cal Baptist Lancers. First pitch at John C. Funk Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
