RIVERSIDE, Calif. — San Diego softball (7-8, 0-0 WCC) on Tuesday evening dropped a mid-week non-conference matchup with Cal Baptist (14-3, 0-0 WAC), suffering a tough 12-3 loss to the Lancers at John C. Funk Stadium.
Cal Baptist got on the board first with a run in the second inning, before notching a six-run fourth frame to make it 7-0.
The Toreros responded in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out rally that plated three total runs.
Kaitlyn Wynia kick-started the rally with an RBI double to center field that would score
Janae Combs, who had reached second on a double to center field. A fielding error from the Lancers and an RBI single from
Taylor Johnson scored two more runs in the inning to pull the Toreros within four at 7-3 after the top of the fifth inning.
San Diego got no closer as CBU scored one run in the bottom of the fifth followed by four runs in the bottom of the sixth to force a run-rule at 12-3.
The Toreros will be back in action this Thursday when they begin play in the Reggie Smith Invitational with a cross-town matchup with San Diego State. First pitch in the tournament opener at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex is set for 5 p.m.
