San Diego Wins Back-to-Back Games at Reggie Smith Invitational

Toreros take down Kansas City to earn second straight victory in their third game at the Reggie Smith Invitational

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (9-9, 0-0 WCC) won its second game of the day as it beat Kansas City (8-9, 0-0 Summit League) 7-3 on Saturday night at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

In the third inning, Kansas City's leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch before a groundout advanced her to second. The Roo's three hole hitter singled in the first run of the game as Kansas City took the lead 1-0. The Toreros tried to respond in the bottom half, but with two runners on base the Roo's defense prevailed with a jumping catch at the wall in deep center field to prevent USD from scoring.

After a Kaitlyn Bartlow 1-2-3 inning in the top half of the fourth, the Toreros had two quick outs in the bottom half before senior Hailey Mulligan placed a drag bunt to the left side of the infield reaching base on an infield hit. On the very next pitch, catcher Shawnese Hogue-Lacy drove an up and in fastball over the left field wall for her first home run of the season, flipping the score and giving USD the lead 2-1.

The following inning, freshman Ava Rojas in her first collegiate start led the inning off with a hit by pitch before lead off hitter Kaitlyn Wynia got her second hit of the game as she doubled in Rojas to extend the USD lead to 3-1.

USD's middle infield crafted another run as junior Michelle Delgado finished a marathon 17-pitch at bat that involved the San Diego shortstop fouling pitches off to ultimately work the walk, before second baseman Axline Mallory drove her in with a single to make it 4-1.

Hogue-Lacy ended a rally in the top of the sixth gunning down a Roo attempting to steal second base, before starting one of her own hitting a single to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Rojas was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, and Wynia drove in the pair of Toreros on base with a double down the left field corner for her third RBI of the night. Delgado singled past the hole in the left infield to make it 7-1 at the end of the sixth.

After the Roos were able to capitalize on a couple of errors, Charlie Johnson came out of the bullpen hours after starting the first game of the doubleheader, as she struck out the first two Roos she faced to close the game out and give San Diego the 7-1 victory.

USD's team leader in ERA Bartlow got the start in the circle as she hurled 6.1 innings giving up three runs (one earned) lowering her season ERA to 1.96.
