Toreros Take Down Matadors for Third Consecutive Victory

San Diego defeats CSUN by 4-2 margin to end Reggie Smith Invitational

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (10-9, 0-0 WCC) completed the Reggie Smith Invitational with a 4-1 victory over CSUN (4-12, 0-0 Big West) on Sunday afternoon in America's finest city.

In the circle for the Toreros was senior Charlie Johnson for her second start and fourth appearance of the weekend. Johnson went six innings, surrendering just five hits and two unearned runs, as she lowered her season ERA to 2.46.

CSUN got on the board first as the cleanup hitter led off the second inning with a double, before scoring on an error with two outs, keeping the inning alive. The following Matador batter singled and gave CSUN a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

After a couple of singles in the following innings, shortstop Hailey Mulligan looped a ball over the shortstop and between the Matador outfielders leading the bottom of the fourth inning off with a double. Sophomore Mallory Axline followed with a triple down the left field line to cut the CSUN lead in half by plating Mulligan. Designated player Janae Combs lined a deep fly ball to left field for the sacrifice fly to tie the game 2-2.

With two out, the bottom of the lineup still produced as Shawnese Hogue-Lacy walked to reach base before Abrielle Diaz made it runners on the corners with a single. Leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Wynia worked the count full before hitting a chopper deflecting off the pitcher's glove, reaching on an infield hit and giving San Diego a 3-2 lead.

The Toreros added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Hogue-Lacy singled to reach base and Diaz walked, putting two runners on. A diving catch by the Matador's shortstop in foul territory looked to end the rally before Carly Ruiz chopped a grounder to the CSUN second baseman who couldn't make the play, pushing the San Diego advantage to 4-2.

Out of the bullpen, Kaitlyn Bartlow came in to close the game out as she produced a fly out, ground out, and finished the game out with a strike out swinging as the Toreros won 4-1.

The Toreros will be back in action this weekend, facing off against Notre Dame on Friday, March 6th at 2:30 p.m. in the USD/SDSU Co-Host Tournament.
