Toreros Dominate Mustangs at Reggie Smith Invitational

San Diego takes down Cal Poly 6-1 in its second game of the Reggie Smith Invitational

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (8-9, 0-0 WCC) got back to winning ways in a 6-1 victory over Cal Poly (5-12, 0-0 BW) in the first of two games on Saturday evening at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

USD struck first against Cal Poly, as junior Kaylee Oh led off the second inning with a double before the Toreros brought her in using productive outs with a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to before she eventually dashed home on a wild pitch to give San Diego an early 1-0 lead.

The following inning was the highest scoring inning so far of the season for the Toreros despite the inning starting with the first two batters getting out. Shortstop Michelle Delgado singled and stole second base before a walk put two runners on base. Designated player Janae Combs came up and roped a line drive over the third baseman's head driving in a run and making it runners in scoring position for USD. Oh walked to reach base in back-to-back innings, as second baseman Mallory Axline came up with the bases loaded. In an at bat that went to a full count and fouling off three pitches, Axline hit a line drive to the right center gap clearing the bases and getting to third for the triple with her first extra base hit of the season. A throwing error from the Mustangs allowed her to dash home and slide just under the tag to score the fifth run of the inning.

San Diego's pitching kept the lead intact as starter Charlie Johnson threw four shutout innings with two strikeouts, mainly keeping the ball in the infield inducing eight groundball outs. Sophomore Alex Riggs followed out of the pen and finished the game, pitching three innings allowing one run in two hits as she also produced seven ground ball outs. The Toreros pitching limited the Mustangs to no extra base hits and seven baserunners in total as San Diego won 6-1.

USD won its third game of the season against Cal Poly, snapping a two game losing skid and resume play later tonight against Kansas City at 7 p.m.
