DAVIS, Calif. — Carly Ruiz delivered a go-ahead RBI bunt-single to send home
Mallory Axline in the top of the eighth inning on Friday afternoon, but the Toreros (0-1, 0-0 WCC) could not hold off UC Davis' response in the bottom of the inning, dropping a tough 3-2 decision to the Aggies (1-1, 0-0 Big West) at La Rue field.
With the game tied up at one run apiece in the first frame of extra's, Ruiz tapped a short bunt towards the pitcher that was just enough for Axline to make a mad dash for home to give the Toreros a 2-1 lead. UC Davis ended the short-lived USD lead in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of RBI fielder's choices to take a 3-2 lead and win the game.
After three innings of scoreless play between the two teams to start the game, the Aggies broke the deadlock by scoring on a Torero throwing error that pushed the first run of the game across the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
Shawnese Hogue-Lacy responded for San Diego in the top of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle that scored Kaitlyn Wynia to knot the game up at one run apiece, and eventually push the game to extra innings after a scoreless seventh inning from both teams.
Charlie Johnson got the start on the mound for the Toreros in her USD debut, and shined, throwing 7.0 full frames and striking out four, while giving up just one earned run on four total hits.
