Toreros Close Out Idaho State Series With 5-3 Win on Saturday

Diaz delivers three-run home run in the fourth as USD takes the series finale at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Toreros (12-14, 0-0 WCC) closed out the Idaho State series with a 5-3 win Saturday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex, earning the victory in the series finale on a power surge in the fourth inning.

Janae Combs got the Toreros on the board first in the second inning, launching a solo home run to deep center — surviving an Idaho State challenge that she hadn't touched first base — to give USD a 1-0 lead. Idaho State answered with a run in the third and two more in the fourth on back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 3-1 advantage.

The Toreros responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Johnson led off with a solo home run to left field to make it 3-2, and after Hailey Mulligan singled and Kaylee Oh reached on an error to put runners on first and second, freshman Abrielle Diaz delivered the biggest swing of the game — a three-run home run to deep center that put USD in front 5-3 and chased the Idaho State starter.

Alex Riggs started and struck out two across 2.1 innings before giving way to Kaitlyn Bartlow, who earned the win. Charlie Johnson then came on in the fifth and was untouchable the rest of the way, allowing no hits and striking out two over three scoreless innings to close out the series finale and earn the save.

The Toreros will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Sacramento to take on the Sac State Hornets for a three game series on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch in the opening game of the double header at Shea Stadium is set for 12 PM.
