Late-Game Rally Falls Short Against Gonzaga in Sunday Finale

Toreros erase early deficit to take short-lived 6-5 lead over Zags before falling by 11-6 margin at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball dropped an 11-6 decision to Gonzaga on Sunday, falling to the Zags (9-12, 2-1 WCC) despite a spirited late-game rally that gave the Toreros (8-14, 1-2 WCC) a short-lived 6-5 lead.

After trailing nearly all afternoon, USD scored three times in the seventh inning on RBI singles from Jayden Lobliner, Andrew Gauna, and Aden Howard — who dropped down a well-placed bunt to allow the go-ahead run to dash home.

But for a second straight day, Gonzaga found some firepower in the game's final frames, this time on a three-run homer from Hudson Shupe in the top of the eighth that put the Zags back in front for good.

Porter Rovin started on the mound for San Diego and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits across three innings while striking out three and walking only one. Drake Frize turned in the Toreros' strongest performance out of the bullpen with a two-inning outing that saw him hold the Zags scoreless across the sixth and seventh.

NOTABLE
  • CJ Moran paced the USD offense by going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Andrew Gauna was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a clutch single that tied the game at five in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Gabe Springer was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth to increase his WCC-leading HBP total to 15. He now ranks seventh nationally in hit by pitches this season.
  • USD scored first in all three of its game against Gonzaga this weekend.
UP NEXT
The Toreros will close out a seven-game homestand on Tuesday night with a midweek matchup against Cal State Fullerton. First pitch at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field is set for 6:05 p.m.
