Toreros Bounce Back With Dominant 6-1 Win over Princeton

Hogue-Lacy goes 3-for-3 with three RBIs, San Diego closes out USD/SDSU tournament with a win

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (11-12, 0-0 WCC) responded in a big way on Monday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex, defeating Princeton 6-1 to close out the USD/SDSU Co-Host Tournament on a high note.

After dropping an 11-10 heartbreaker to the Tigers just two days prior, the Toreros came out with a sense of urgency and never looked back. Charlie Johnson set the tone on the mound, working 4.2 innings and allowing just one earned run before giving way to Kaitlyn Bartlow, who slammed the door with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Princeton got on the board first in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle from Sonia Zhang, but San Diego answered immediately in the bottom half. Taylor Johnson led off with a double off the top of the wall in deep center, before Ava Rojas came in to pinch run for her. Mallory Axline followed with a single down the right field line to put runners on the corners, just before Rojas scored on a muffed throw on Axline's stolen base attempt — tying the game at one. Shawnese Hogue-Lacy then singled through the right side to put runners on first and third, and Hailey Mulligan plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly down the right field line to make it 2-1.

The Toreros blew it open in the fifth. With one out and the bases loaded, Kaylee Oh drew a walk to score Kaitlyn Wynia — who had reached on a hit-by-pitch — before Hogue-Lacy then tripled down the right field line to clear the bases — scoring Michelle Delgado, Axline, and Oh — putting San Diego up 6-1. Hogue-Lacy finished a perfect 3-for-3 on the evening with a double, a triple, and three RBIs, delivering one of the best individual performances of the season. Bartlow then closed out the final two innings without allowing a run, giving the Toreros a clean and commanding finish.

The Toreros will be back in action this Friday, as they host Idaho State for a three-game series at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex, beginning with a doubleheader at 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, before closing out the series on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
