Toreros Drop Midweek Contest to UC San Diego at Reggie Smith

San Diego rallies to pull within two in fifth inning, but can't overcome four-run fourth from Tritons

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (16-25, 3-6 WCC) dropped a 7-3 decision in the middle game of a three game non-conference midweek swing to UC San Diego (18-22, 7-11 Big West) on Wednesday evening at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

The Toreros got on the board in the third when Taylor Johnson doubled to deep center and came around to score on a Kaylee Oh single to tie the game at one. But the Tritons pulled ahead with a four-run fourth inning and San Diego never regained the lead.

The Toreros added two runs in the fifth — Johnson drove in Kaitlyn Wynia with a single up the middle, and Abrielle Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly to score Mallory Axline — to pull within two, but UC San Diego tacked on two more in the seventh to seal the result. Kaitlyn Bartlow started for the second consecutive game before making way for Alex Riggs and Charlie Johnson in relief for USD.

The Toreros will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Hawai'i to cap off a trio of non-conference games this week. First pitch at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex opposite the Rainbow Wahine is set for 5 p.m.
