Big Night from Mestas Not Enough in Series Opener Versus Gaels

Graduate infielder drives in three as San Diego falls 10-4 to Saint Mary's on Friday night

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball was unable to take down Saint Mary's in the series opener at Fowler Park Friday, falling 10-4 to the Gaels.

The Toreros (15-24, 7-9 WCC) got multi-hit performances from three of their top four hitters in the lineup but could not take down the Gaels (24-17, 9-7 WCC) in the teams' first meeting since last year's WCC Tournament Championship last May.

CJ Moran went 2-for-3 with two walks in the lead off spot. He was then followed by a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI from Gage Mestas. Diego Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with his first collegiate triple while batting in the cleanup spot for the first time this season.

His triple capped off a first inning where the Toreros matched Saint Mary's with a run in the opening frame from an RBI groundout from Andrew Gauna

After Saint Mary's got four more in the second, San Diego punched back with two in their half of the frame on a two-run double by Mestas to right center field, scoring Jayton Greer and Cade Martinez.

Diego Gutierrez got the start for the Toreros and allowed five runs on seven hits across 3.1 innings. He and Logan Piper combined to work the fourth before Caleb Sebek and Aidan Gonzalez took the fifth and sixth innings.

Mestas recorded his third RBI of the evening in the sixth inning on a base hit to center field, scoring Cade Martinez to cut the lead down to 8-4.

Christian Garcia dazzled in the seventh by striking out the side before Lucas Shannon and Jagger Edwards rounded out the game for USD on the mound.

Saint Mary's expanded its lead late with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth before tacking on two more in the eighth.

NOTABLE
  • With 10 hits Friday, San Diego has registered double-digit hits in three consecutive games and four of its last five contests.
  • Gauna, who entered Friday leading the WCC with 23 RBI and a .475 batting average and 23 RBI, now has at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games since the series finale at Pepperdine (March 29).
  • With two hits Friday, Moran now has at least two hits in three consecutive games.
    • Moran also logged two walks while reaching base in four of his five plate appearances. It is his fourth game this season with multiple base on balls.
  • Mestas extended his hitting streak to five games while also recording his fourth straight multi-hit game.
    • The graduate transfer also registered his third, three-RBI game of the season (Also: April 19 vs. Seattle U and April 10 at San Francisco).
  • Gonzalez, who earned his first start in the cleanup spot of USD's lineup, registered his first collegiate triple in the first inning on a ball to the right center field gap. It marks his third straight game with an extra-base hit after hitting the game-tying home run against UC San Diego (April 21) and the two home runs in the series final against Seattle U (April 19). Since April 18, Gonzalez is hitting .389 (7-for-18) with three runs, six RBI, a triple, and three home runs while recording his third straight multi-hit game Friday.
  • Sebek has completed at least four outs in five straight appearances and eight of his last nine trips to the hill.
