Dear Torero fans,
As we wrap up our first week together, I can't help but feel excited and grateful for where we are and where we're headed. It's been an outstanding start to the summer, and our group has fully embraced the opportunity to be together on campus, building the foundation for what we believe can be a special season.
Our emphasis has been simple: GET BETTER DAILY by relying on our daily habits. We know success isn't built overnight — it's built through consistency, discipline, and the choices we make every single day. This group is attacking that challenge!
One of the most exciting parts of the week has been having our entire team together, competing every morning at 6:30 a.m. There's a different energy in the gym when a group is committed to a common goal, and our players have brought great enthusiasm and competitiveness each day.
Just as important, we've enjoyed the moments away from the court as well. We've spent time getting to know one another through team meals, yoga sessions, and even some dodgeball on our day off! We're embracing every challenge while making sure we're having fun throughout the process.
During this first week, our play on the wing was a bright spot for our squad.
Dusty Stromer has brought a veteran presence and demeanor to everything he does. He's a proven shot-maker, a high-level athlete, and a committed defender. His experience and maturity have been evident from the moment he arrived!
Marqui Worthy Jr. is a born leader! His voice and command of this team will be key to our success. His versatility to play on and off the ball offensively, then impact the ball defensively, will be a major factor throughout the year!
Terry McMorris has consistently impacted practice with his length, athleticism, and defensive versatility. He is a true disruptor who plays with an organic urgency to make winning plays. His energy has been contagious and has elevated the competitiveness of our group!
Brannon Martinsen continues to impress with how much older he plays than his age. He is aggressive on both ends of the floor and has a natural knack for finishing possessions on the glass. His toughness and instincts have been on display every day!
As we move into Week 2 and beyond, our focus remains the same: embrace our daily habits and GET BETTER DAILY. We're beginning to establish the standards that will define our program and hold one another accountable to them. That accountability to our standard will allow us to define our team identity! This is going to be a fun group to coach, and we're incredibly excited about the journey ahead.
Before I sign off, a huge congratulations to Coach Mike Brown, a former Torero who's now made history in the NBA with last Saturday's championship title. He continues to make USD proud — exemplifying the same commitment to excellence we are building today. Read more HERE.
G.B.D. and Go Toreros!
