TEMPE, Ariz. — San Diego wiped out an eight-point deficit in the third set Sunday afternoon and served at 25-24 with a chance to take a 2-1 lead on No. 24 Oregon. The Ducks won the next three rallies, took the set 27-25 and closed out a 3-1 win (25-16, 19-25, 25-27, 17-25) at Desert Financial Arena.
The Toreros (3-5, 0-0 WCC) hit .186 for the match with 46 kills and 20 errors on 140 swings, and out-blocked the Ducks 11.0 to 10.0. Oregon (7-1, 0-0 Big Ten) answered with 56 kills, a .208 clip and seven aces to San Diego's four.
The third set had looked settled at 20-12.
BayLea Sparks sided the Toreros out with a kill,
Kylie Munday took the service line and stayed there for the next seven points, and San Diego ran off eight in a row to pull level at 20.
Nemo Beach put away two swings during the stretch, the block turned back Valentina Vaulet and Marina Crownover, and Munday closed it with an ace before her service error handed the ball back.
Oregon pushed ahead 23-20, but San Diego answered again to force a 24-24 tie and took the lead when Sjakkie Donkers swung long. The Ducks won the last three rallies from there, all on San Diego attack errors and two of them blocked.
Little of that resembled the opening set, which the Toreros controlled from the first sideout. San Diego scored five straight to lead 13-3, hit .320 with 11 kills and three errors, and held Oregon to .056 while putting up five team blocks to the Ducks' one.
Meghan Scholz went 3-for-3 at the net in the set and added four block assists.
Oregon found its offense after that and never lost it. The Ducks hit .297 in the second set behind eight Donkers kills, pulled away from a 12-12 tie with a 4-0 run, and closed the match hitting .405 in the fourth with 18 kills against three errors. San Diego did not record a block in the final set.
Kierstyn Barton led the Toreros with 15 kills and added 10 digs, an ace and two block assists in the match. Beach finished with 11 kills on .310 hitting, nine digs and four total blocks, including both of San Diego's solo stuffs. Munday notched a double-double as she ran the offense to 35 assists and 10 digs, and
Lauren Lynch posted a match-high 17 digs while passing 20 balls with one reception error. Scholz led all Toreros with six total blocks to go with eight kills and a .316 clip, and Sparks hit .400 with five kills and three block assists.
The match took 2 hours, 12 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 167. San Diego finished the Snyder-Park Classic 1-2 after a five-set win over UC Davis on Friday and a four-set loss to No. 7 Arizona State on Saturday.Â
