KANSAS CITY, Mo. — No. 10 San Diego lost a player to a red card before halftime Sunday night, then spent the rest of the evening trading chances with a ranked host, falling 1-0 to Kansas City in front of 490 at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
The Toreros (5-2-1, 0-0-0 WCC) were reduced to 10 players in the 36th minute and still finished level with the Roos (5-1-2, 0-0-0 Summit League) at 12 shots apiece. San Diego held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal and forced every save Kansas City's goalkeeper was asked to make.
Playing short-handed did not slow the attack. The Toreros took nine shots after the break to Kansas City's eight, and three of those drew saves out of the Roos' keeper.
Kansas City broke through in the 74th minute, when Mariano Beunza scored his fourth of the season off a two-man buildup, 38 minutes after the sending off.
San Diego's best stretch came at the end. The Toreros generated five shots inside the final 10 minutes, three of them on frame, with
Matteo Salcedo testing the keeper in the 81st and again in the 88th and
Oliver Rhoades forcing one more in the 89th.
Salcedo led all players with three shots and put all three on target.
Tobias Polz also had three attempts, and 17 Toreros saw the field.
Lucca Adams went the full 90 minutes in goal and faced just two shots on target all night, turning one away as a 10-man San Diego side kept a ranked home team from generating much of anything in front of its own crowd.

The Toreros return home on Saturday evening to host the Denver Pioneers to open up West Coast Conference play. Kickoff at Torero stadium is set for 5 p.m.
