BOULDER, Colo. — For the second straight tournament,
Cooper Humphreys saved his lowest round for last. The junior closed with a 4-under 66 on Wednesday to finish fourth individually at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, and the University of San Diego men's golf team placed fourth among 17 teams at Boulder Country Club.
The 66 matched Arkansas State's Jake Wallis for the day's low round and moved Humphreys up 12 spots from a tie for 16th, leaving him at 7-under 203 (67-70-66) and one stroke behind Colorado's Brandon Knight for third. He tied for fifth at USD's Vuori Invitational earlier this month, making it two top-five finishes in as many events this fall.
San Diego finished at 10-under 830 (277-275-278) and was one of three teams in the field — along with champion Arkansas State and host Colorado — to break par in all three rounds. A closing 2-under 278 tied Colorado for the day's second-best team score behind Arkansas State's 272 and lifted the Toreros out of a three-way tie for fifth after 36 holes. That left them five strokes behind Colorado for third and three clear of fifth-place Denver.
Reid Piron and
Reed Arnaldo matched each other round for round at 70-67-70 to tie for 11th at 3-under 207. The sophomores' twin second-round 67s anchored USD's 5-under 275, its best team score of the event.
Junior
Brady Clark tied for 44th at 4-over 214, with his opening 70 and closing 72 both counting toward the team total, and senior
You Seong Choi tied for 71st at 10-over 220. Junior
Henry Dall, competing as an individual, finished 91st at 17-over 227.
Henry Styles won medalist honors by six strokes at 15-under 195, leading an Arkansas State team that went 1-2 individually and took the team title at 27-under 813, seven shots ahead of Long Beach State.
