Box Score
It seemed as if nothing was to be decided Friday night at Torero Stadium between San Diego and Loyola Marymount- until San Diego senior forward Sy Reeves scored with 25 seconds remaining in double-overtime to allow host USD a 2-1 win, San Diego's tenth straight. A season-high 1,210 fans witnessed both teams exchange offensive chances throughout. San Diego (11-2-2; 3-0 WCC) put eight shots on goal and 20 towards the Lion net. The win allowed the Toreros to remain atop the WCC standings with a prefect 3-0 league record.
Torero senior Eric Wunderle initiated the scoring eight minutes into the contest on Friday night, netting a cross from freshman teammate Ryan Guy. LMU had an opportunity to respond moments later when San Diego was whistled for a foul inside the penalty area. USD freshman goalkeeper and reigning WCC Player of the Week Lance Friesz made a diving stop to deny the Lion's penalty attempt. USD held a 1-0 lead at the break.
Loyola Marymount (8-6-1; 0-3 WCC) was able to even the score just minutes into the second half when sophomore Jimmy Burling headed in a corner kick from teammate Junior Ybarra . The score stood at one goal apiece throughout the remainder of the second half and into a pair of overtime sessions despite numerous opportunities by both clubs.
As time ticked down in the second overtime period, Torero senior Kellen Hiroto ricocheted a shot off the hands of Loyola Marymount goalkeeper Shaun Kalnasy that was immediately fired into the back of the net by Reeves. The goal set off an extended celebration for the Toreros and their home fans. The loss left a number of LMU players lying on the field in disbelief- as the goal marked the fourth time in as many outings the Lions lost in overtime.
