(Northridge, CA) -- The University of San Diego men's soccer team, playing their first road contest of the season, improved to 6-2-2 by upsetting 18th-ranked Cal State Northridge (5-1-2) by the score of 3-1. The victory was San Diego's fifth straight win dating back to their September 21st victory over Cal Poly. It was also head coach Seamus McFadden's 250th career victory in 25 years at the helm of the Torero program.
Senior captain Sy Reeves scored in the 29th minute of play to get USD on the scoreboard first. The play was set up by Eric Wunderle's free kick that Kevin Wilson collected and passed over to Reeves for his second goal of the season. Senior midfielder Eric Wunderle (Poway, CA; Poway HS) then scored his first two goals of the season in the 34th and 48th minutes to put the match out of reach. Wunderle's first goal was from 10 yards out off assists from Michael Caso and Matt McCausland. His second came off a turnover with Wilson assisting on his 30-yard score. CSUN's Joshua LeRoy scored against Torero backup goalie Jeremy Butcher with just under 3 minutes to play in the match. Torero keeper Lance Friesz recorded 4 saves in 81 minutes of action in the net. San Diego outshot the Matadors 22-12 and held the edge in corner kicks, 5-0.
The Toreros next play at San Diego State this coming Saturday, October 11th, in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
