Box Score

San Diego received 22 kills and 12 digs from junior outside hitter Devon Forster and 17 kills and 14 digs from junior right side Kristen Hurst, but it was not enough to snap a two-match losing streak as San Francisco upset No. 22 San Diego 3-2 Friday night in War Memorial Gym. Sophomore libero Jackie Bernardin chipped in a match-high 24 digs for the Toreros. Individual game scores went (30-24, 26-30, 28-30, 30-26, 15-10). A record crowd of 1,675 witnessed the Dons (22-6, 6-6 WCC) beat the Toreros (17-9, 6-5 WCC) for the first time since 1995.

Trailing two games to one with the match and a possible NCAA berth hanging in the balance for San Francisco, senior middle blocker Teresa Russell simply took over, slamming six kills with a pair of blocks down the stretch in game four and added three kills and two more blocks in the final game. Russell served the last four points of the game-five victory as USF collected their second win this season against a top-25 opponent.

Russell's stat line was truly impressive. A match-high 22 kills on .360 hitting to go along with 12 digs and 10 blocks for the second triple-double of her career and the first for San Francisco this season. Russell tallied 13 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks in a win against UC Riverside Sept. 22, 2000.

Senior outside hitter Brittanie Budinger 20 kills and added 11 digs on the night and her final kill tied the school career kills record with 1,468 as she ties USF Hall-of-Famer Melanie Kaiser (1988-91). It was a big night for senior setter April Scoggin, who dished out 65 assists to go along with five kills as the USF offense hit at a .254 clip for the contest. With her seventh kill of the night, Scoggin passesd Sarah McCandless (1992-95) for second place on the career assists ledger and with her 14th dish of the night made her the most prolific setter in USF single-season history with 1,310, shattering the old mark of 1258 held by Denise MacDougal (1991).

Four Dons turned in double-doubles, paced by Russell's rare triple and Budinger. Senior outside hitter Caroline Skacel recorded 12 kills on .333 hitting and added a team-high 18 kills for USF. Senior middle blocker Liz MacAusland added 10 kills on .529 hitting to go along with 10 digs.
