San Diego, CA- San Diego opened its home schedule by drubbing Nevada-Reno 96-74 Saturday afternoon at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Torero offense erupted for 20 points in first five minutes of the second half to blow out the Wolfpack and improve to 1-1 on the season. USD senior Marta Menuez scored a game-best 23 to go along with eight rebounds.
Nevada, playing in its first game of the season, trailed 44-42 at halftime after trading baskets with San Diego throughout the game's first twenty minutes. On a basket by junior star April Bankston, Nevada took a 42-41 lead with 1:10 remaining before halftime. Bankston totaled a team-high 18 for a Wolfpack team that had four players reach double-figures in scoring.
San Diego out-rebounded Nevada 39-25 on the afternoon and was never threatened after sophomore Lindsay Helvey connected on a three-point basket from the corner- extending San Diego's lead to 57-48 with 14:03 remaining. Menuez put in a lay-up moments later as an inspired San Diego team went on a 19-6 second half run to win easily.
Senior Melissa Padgett equaled a career-high with 16 points, passed out five assists and hauled in seven rebounds. Freshman standout Ashley Voisinet scored 12 and sophomores Jamie Corwin and Tiara Harris combined to score 24.
The Toreros will next play UNLV in Las Vegas next Saturday at 4:30pm.
