Torero Volleyball Downs Preseason MWC Favorite Utah

San Diego moved to 2-0 on the young season with a five-game win over the defending Mountain West Champion Utah Utes Saturday morning in Tempe. The Toreros won by game scores of (30-18, 30-16, 27-30, 27-30, 15-7). Junior attacker Devon Forster led San Diego with 22 kills and 15 digs. USD now faces host Arizona State later tonight as the 2003 Sun Devil Volleyball Classic comes to a close.

After convincing San Diego victories in both games one and two, Utah fought back to claim games three and four. The Toreros were able to win the decisive game five 15-7 and win the match. Four San Diego players reached double figures in kills. Along with Forster's 22, freshmen standouts Cassie Wolpern and Christie Dawson combined for 25 and junior Kristen Hurst posted 11. Lindsey Sherburne, who ranked ninth nationally last season in assists per game, gave out a match-high 61 Saturday morning.

Utah fell to 0-2 after losing to host Arizona State Friday evening. The Utes were paced by Kim Turner's 20 kills. Jackie Morrill dug a match-best 15 for Utah.
