(San Diego, CA) - The Anteaters of UC Irvine, currently ranked No. 7 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, picked up a non-conference win over host San Diego Tuesday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. The Anteaters scored four first inning runs en route to a 14-4 victory. San Diego (20-18) had won six consecutive games before Tuesday's game with UC Irvine (23-7-1). USD leftfielder Joe Wickman had a pair of hits for a Torero team that prepares for a three-game road series at Pepperdine.
The Anteaters put up four runs in the top half of the first inning off USD starter Tom Caple (1-8). A two-run homer from Erik Johnson highlighted an inning that saw UCI bring eight batters to the plate. The Torero offense answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to cut into the Irvine advantage. Gavin Ng singled home Wickman in the fourth to make the score 4-3.
UC Irvine touched up San Diego reliever Pat Lucy for four runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 8-3- an advantage that would swell to 10 after a six-run eighth. The Anteaters ripped seven different Torero pitchers for 16 hits, of which seven went for extra bases.
The Toreros were held below the 10-hit plateau for the first time in 11 outings. San Diego had posted 10 or more hits dating back to a March 26th road game with St. Mary's. USD will attempt to win its sixth straight WCC contest when the Toreros visit Pepperdine Friday at 3pm.
