The Santa Clara Broncos followed a 9-0 perfect game victory with a 5-4 comeback win to sweep a doubleheader over San Diego on Sunday afternoon. The Toreros fall to 16-30 (3-13 PCSC) with the losses while the Broncos improve to 26-23 (12-4 PCSC).
In Game One, Santa Clara's Jaime Forman-Lau tossed a perfect game, striking out 9 of the 15 Toreros hitters she faced. The Broncos' Jessica Clee helped out at the plate with a grand slam to straightaway centerfield in the second inning en route to a 9-0 SCU victory. Highlighting San Diego was Gina McFarland who pitched two perfect innings of relief in her first appearance since April 10th.
The Toreros were not intimidated with Forman-Lau coming back to start Game Two as Jennifer Delpit crushed a double to the right center gap to score Sara Mason, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With Alicia Massei on second base in the second inning, Ashlee Nunes lined a shot past the centerfielder and came all the way around to score for an inside-the-park home run, giving San Diego a 3-0 lead. It was the first home run of her career. After giving up two runs in the bottom of the third, USD made it a 4-2 lead on Cindy McGee's RBI groundout in the sixth, but they were unable to hold on as Santa Clara put together two hits and took advantage of a Torero error to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-4 win. Seven different hitters collected hits for San Diego. USD senior Allison Williams pitched the complete game allowing four earned runs on just five hits.
The Toreros finish up the regular season on the road next weekend with a four-game series against the Saint Mary's Gaels. Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders are set to begin at 12 noon.
