Sept. 22, 2004

Box Score

(San Diego, CA) - Visiting UC Riverside ran its unbeaten streak to seven, knocking off San Diego 1-0 Tuesday night at USD's Torero Stadium. Seven minutes into the game Highlander forward Kacie McElrath scored an unassisted goal from 35 yards out to allow UC Riverside (7-0) its first-ever win against the Toreros. San Diego (4-5) dominated the contest in the second half and out-shot the Highlanders 20-7, but USD was unable to find the net and suffers back-to-back losses at home for just the second time in four years.

10 different Torero players fired shots at Highlander goalkeeper Tawny Poggio. San Diego junior Brooke Roby and freshman Vanessa Vella each had four shots and sophomore Veronica Ambort put three on goal. Poggio and a determined UCR defense combined for eight saves, six in the second half, to keep the home team off the scoreboard. UCR put a total of three shots on goal with Torero keeper Karen Cook saving two.

San Diego finishes its four-game home stand 2-2. After consecutive wins against both San Diego State (4-1) and Long Beach State (6-0), the Toreros lost to USC (0-2) on Sunday and drops below .500 on the year with Tuesday night's setback to UCR. San Diego will travel to Las Vegas this Friday to play UNLV before returning to Torero Stadium for a Sunday afternoon match with two-time defending Big West Champs Cal Poly SLO at 12pm.
