(San Diego, CA) For the first time since 2001, USD upset 4th ranked UCLA 4-2 Thursday night in their final home match of the 2005 season. The Torero's explosive offense caught the Bruins off-guard as San Diego attacked again and again in front of nearly 2000 fans at Torero Stadium.
Prior to the start of the match was a celebration of the final home game for seniors Jan Prochazka, Calle Rendahl, Scott Martin and Tommy Von Bromsen as they were honored in a pre-game ceremony for their dedication to Toreros men's soccer program and USD athletics.
With the ceremonies complete, the match began in high gear as USD mid-fielders Dustin Guerrero and Ryan Guy both had close shots on Bruin goalie Eric Reed in the first 13 minutes of the match putting UCLA on notice that the Toreros brought their "A-game".
"We out-played them in every category," said head coach Seamus McFadden. "Ryan Guy really stepped up for us as well as Kevin Meissner."
Torero mid-fielder Ryan Guy struck first as USD penetrated the Bruin offense. Guy was inside the penalty box when a deflected pass came at him. From the left side of the penalty box, Guy took the shot from 10 yards out and into the right side of the net for a USD 1-0 lead.
The Bruins quickly reset and 28 seconds later forward Kamani Hill connected from the outside wing with mid-fielder Jonathan Bornstein. Bornstein took a shot from 12 yards out at the penalty mark towards the left post tying the game 1-1. Hill was credited with the assist.
USD was back in Bruin territory in the 36th minute when defender Calle Rendahl led forward Scott Martin up-field. Martin found the pass and broke away from his defender leaving him and the keeper one-on-one. Martin's low shot from 14 yards out found the right side of the net for a 2-1 lead. Rendahl was credited with the assist.
"The team really stepped up as a whole to win this game," said McFadden. "Calle Rendahl had a great game, [Scott] Martin and Tommy Von Bromsen came up big for us, as well as Michael Caso. [Caso] was huge in this game."
USD out-shot UCLA 8-3 in the first half as they kept Bruin goalie Eric Reed busy recording 4 saves.
In the 63rd minute, Rendahl crossed mid-field with the ball where from 30-yards out, he fired off a shot bending it to the right. The ball sailed up, past the goalie, and into the middle-upper net increasing San Diego's lead 3-1.
USD marched back down field in the 69th minute as Guy found mid-fielder Dustin Guerrero inside the penalty box. UCLA's goalie charged but was not able to block Guerrero's shot as he put it in the lower right corner of the net and a 4-1 lead. Guy was credited with the assist.
UCLA would not go quietly as they made a late rally in the 78th minute. Unaware how close forward Maxwell Griffin, a San Diego defenseman made a touch-pass back to goalie Lance Friesz. Maxwell intercepted the pass and took the shot from 7 yards out for the final goal of the match as San Diego defeats UCLA 4-2.
The Bruins had their 7 game streak of no losses snapped tonight as they drop to 11-4-3 overall and remain 6-1-2 in Pac-10 conference action.
"With this win, we're in," said McFadden in regards to the NCAA tournament. "Coming into the match, I thought we had a chance if we won or tied these last two matches against UCLA and LMU. This win only helps us."
The Toreros move to 9-5-5 overall this season and 4-4-3 in the WCC. Currently they are tied for 3rd place in the WCC standings. Their next opponent, LMU, is 5-4-1 in conference play and in 2nd place in the WCC standings.
