Final Stats
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Torero softball team opened up its 2005 season by splitting a doubleheader against the UC San Diego Tritons (2-2) on Saturday afternoon. After dropping Game One by a score of 4-0, the Toreros came back to win 5-2 in Game Two.
Game One was scoreless into the fifth inning, until the Tritons put together four singles in the top of the fifth, taking a 2-0 lead. UCSD added two more runs in the seventh to finish the scoring at 4-0. USD threatened in the bottom of seventh with Sara Mason and Marissa Merchain starting the inning with back-to-back singles, but San Diego was unable to get on the board.
After allowing an unearned run in the top of the first in Game Two, the Toreros scored their first run of the season in the bottom half of the inning when Mason drilled the ball off the base of the wall in right center, scoring Ashlee Nunes. USD took the lead in the fourth with a two-run single by Nunes, her third hit of the game. Holding a 3-1 lead in the sixth, San Diego added insurance runs on a two-run triple by Gina McFarland. The Tritons would score another unearned run in the seventh to finish the game at 5-2. Erin Harmonson pitched the complete game for USD, allowing no earned runs while striking out four.
