USD Drops Pair Of Heartbreakers At Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara Broncos (25-30; 8-10 PCSC) handed the San Diego Toreros (17-23; 7-11 PCSC) two losses in their final at bat on Saturday afternoon. In the opener, the Broncos used a ninth-inning single to break a 3-3 tie and take the victory. They followed that up by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 6-5 victory.

The Toreros got on the scoreboard first in the opener, when Sara Mason scored on a sacrifice fly by Rebekah Bradford in the second inning. After Santa Clara tied it at one in the bottom of the inning, USD took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a leadoff home run by Mason. The Broncos came back again in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of two hit batters and a walk to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead.

Mason continued her excellent game in the seventh, driving in Gina McFarland on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three. Mason finished the game 1-for-1 with a home run, two runs, two RBI, two walks and a sacrifice fly. Neither team was able to score in eighth, but Santa Clara put together three straight hits in the bottom of the ninth to take the game 4-3.

The Toreros came back strong in Game Two, scoring two runs in both the second and third innings to take an early 4-0 lead. The Broncos answered in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on four hits to narrow the lead to one. San Diego would bounce back with four hits of their own in the fourth, but were only able to score one run to take a 5-3 lead.

USD would give Santa Clara an unearned run in the sixth inning with a walk and an error, narrowing the lead back to one. Another Torero error would put the Bronco leadoff hitter on base to start the bottom of the seventh. Santa Clara would follow that up with two RBI singles to steal the game with a 6-5 victory.

The same two teams will finish up their four-game series tomorrow with another doubleheader starting at 12 noon. It will be the final two games of the year for the Toreros.
