Riverside, CA - The University of San Diego dropped their season opener to UC Riverside Highlanders, 12-5 on Friday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
In a back and forth battle, the Highlanders scored in the top of the first inning as April Murray stole second, then got to third on a wild pitch by Erin Harmonson. San Diego quickly responded when senior Ashlee Nunes scored on an error by Kristie Martinez tying the game 1-1.
The Highlanders took 3 runs during the top of the second for a 4-1 lead. Toreros junior Alicia Massei scored when junior Danielle Trieber hit a single advancing Massei on an error by the Highlanders cutting the deficit 4-2.
A scoreless third inning led to the Toreros scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth. With freshman Emily Passovoy on third and Trieber on second, Nunes hit a double tallying an RBI and moving Trieber around to third. Junior Rebekah Bradford hit a double allowing Nunes and Trieber to score and recapture the lead from the Highlanders 5-4.
UC Riverside scored 8 unanswered runs in the last three innings for the win.
The Toreros offense played well according to Head Coach Melissa McElvain. Ashlee Nunes went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs. Alicia Massei went 1-for-3 with 1 run while Daniel Treiber went 3-for-3 with 1 run. San Diego had 14 hits and 4 errors to Riverside's 16 hits and 3 errors.
USD continues tournament play as they take on San Jose State at 9:00 am and St. Mary's at 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
