Riverside, CA - The University of San Diego Softball team ended the day with a split decision on Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational. The Toreros lost early in the morning to San Jose State, 5-3 and won their afternoon game against St. Mary's, 8-2.
USD moves to 1-2 at the end of the day with one game remaining in the tournament.
In game one, San Jose State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Courtney Lewis started off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a Spartan sacrifice. With two outs, Brittany McConnell singled to score Lewis. Smith then came to the plate and hit a two-run home run to left field.
San Diego came back in the top of the second inning with three runs, but the Spartans again responded in the bottom of the inning with a run to take the lead for good. San Jose State added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning as McConnell scored on a Kristy Ballinger sacrifice fly.
Erin Harmonson (0-2) was tallied with the loss pitching 4.2 innings with 5 hits, 1 run, 1 error and 2 strike outs. Danielle Trieber went 1-for-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI while Ashlee Nunes went 1-for-4 with 1 RBI.
In game two, San Diego scored first against the Gaels, 1-0 when Kathleen Bonja doubled in the bottom of the first inning allowing Rebekah Bradford to score. St. Mary's responded in the top of the third tying the game, 1-1 then scored again in the top of the fourth taking the lead, 2-1.
San Diego responded in the bottom of the fourth in a big way recapturing the lead. With two outs, Merchain walked on. Fritsch followed with a single moving Merchain to second. Nunes singled moving the base runners around again. Bradford doubled which brought home Fritsch and Merchain and recapturing the lead 3-2.
Kathleen Bonja singled through the left side allowing Nunes to score from third and putting runners at the corners. Sarah Mason doubled down the left field line past San Jose's third basemen scoring Bonja and Bradford and a 6-2 lead.
USD's K Burk and Ashlee Nunes scored again in the bottom of the 6th to seal the game 8-2.
Gina McFarland (1-0) picks up the win pitching a complete game allowing 2 hits on 2 errors and walking only 2 batters. Sophomore Kathleen Bonja with 3-for-3 with 1 run and 3 RBI, Rebekah Bradford went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI, and Ashlee Nunes went 1-for-2 with 2 runs.
The Toreros gear up for the final day at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sunday against San Jose State at 10 am.
