SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 58-51 West Coast Conference loss to the Bulldogs of Gonzaga University Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 8-18 overall and 3-10 in the WCC, while the Bulldogs improve to 15-13 overall and 10-3 in the WCC with the win.
During the first half of play, the two teams exchanged the lead nine times, with the Toreros leading holding the biggest margin of four points at 23-19 with 5:25 remaining in the period. The Bulldogs were able to get back those four points by the half to leave both teams knotted at 29 going into the break.
In the second half, the seesaw battle continued with Gonzaga controlling the lead most of the way, but the Toreros were able to regain the lead late in the period on a pair of Sabine Loewe free throws giving USD a 51-49 advantage.
The Bulldogs then went on a 9-0 run to end the game and claim the victory over the Toreros for the second time this season.
Freshman guard Kelly Winther led the Toreros in scoring with 14 points and Tiara Harris added 12 as the only other USD player in double digits. USD shot 31.6 percent from the floor, while Gonzaga shot 38.2 percent from the floor.
For the Bulldogs, the team's leading scorer on the season, Stephanie Hawk, led the way with her game-high 19 points and she added a game-high 15 rebounds to post a double-double. Jami Bjorklund added 13 points and Anne Bailey added 10 for the Bulldogs.
The Toreros will close out their regular season with a 2 p.m. game on Saturday at the Jenny Craig Pavilion against the University of Portland. USD will honor its four seniors at the game. Seniors to be honored are: Tiara Harris, Polly Dong, Lindsay Helvey and Brandi Collato.
