SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team (9-5) split their final two games of the USD Invitational posting a shutout against the University of Nevada Wolfpack, 6-0, and lost to UC Riverside Highlanders, 4-0, Sunday evening at the USD softball complex.
Senior Ashlee Nunes led off the inning with a single, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Kathleen Bonja recorded an RBI single on a shot in the left field, scoring Nunes from third. Senior Sara Mason singled through the right side advancing Bonja to second. Gina McFarland grounded out to second base advancing Mason and Bonja one base. With Mason on second base and Bonja on third, junior Virginia Fritch belted a two-run single scoring both Bonja and Mason increasing San Diego's lead to 3-0.
San Diego also recorded one run the second, fourth, and sixth innings capping the score at 6-0.
Offensively for San Diego Virginia Fritsch hit 3-for-4 with three RBI. Mason hit 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Nunes hit 2-for-4 with one run.
Senior Erin Harmonson pitched a complete game giving up no runs and striking out three Nevada batters.
In the night cap, San Diego was shutout 4-0. April Murray scored twice for the Highlanders and hit 3-for-4. Ynez Canela came in to pinch run and recorded a run. Veronica Yee also recorded a run to cap the score 4-0.
Gina McFarland records the loss moving to 2-2.
Offensively for San Diego, Valenzuela, Merchain, Passovoy, and Bradford all recorded hits for USD.
The Toreros will play cross-town rival San Diego State on March 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
