Cal Poly Captures Series with 8-6 Win Over USD

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The 25th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team was defeated by No. 30 Cal Poly, 8-6, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference affair at Baggett Stadium.

With the lost the Toreros fall under .500 with a 7-8 record and have lost their seventh consecutive game. With the win Cal Poly improves to 12-5 overall and claim the three-game series.

After the Mustangs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Toreros answered back in the top of the second inning scoring two runs on two hits. USD's first run of the game came on a Shane Buschini solo home run to right field. After Keoni Ruth singled and stole second, Kevin Hansen drove him in on a RBI single up the middle cutting the lead to one.

USD would then take the lead in the third inning scoring three runs on six hits. Steve Singleton led off the inning on a single and moved to second on a Daniel Magness single through the right side. Jordan Abruzzo then loaded the bases on a bunt and Buschini drove in the first run on a single up the middle. The Toreros final two runs came on RBI singles by Ruth and Ryan Lilly giving the Toreros a 5-3 lead.

Cal Poly took back one run in the sixth and regained the lead in the seventh inning scoring four runs on three hits.

USD would take one run back in the top of the ninth inning on an Abruzzo RBI single to right field scoring Justin Snyder, who had singled. But USD could come no closer leaving the game at its final of 8-6.

Abruzzo went 3-for-5 with one RBI and Ruth went 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Toreros offense.

Josh Romanski (0-3) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. USD Starter Brian Matusz had a strong outing allowing four runs on five hits while striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work. Casey Fien (1-0) was credited with the win for the Mustangs allowing no runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they close out the three-game series with the Mustangs in a 1 p.m. game at Baggett Stadium.
