Softball Captures Game Two Victory in Extra Innings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team took the Loyola Marymount University Lions into extra innings in game two tied 3-3. Alicia Massei hit a single into shallow left field allowing Danielle Treiber to score the winning run from third and defeating the Lions 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.

With two outs and no runners on base, Danielle Treiber got on base with a walk. Nicole Valenzuela singled to center field advancing Treiber to second base. Rebekah Bradford slapped a ball back at the pitcher who was unable to make the throw to first base, both Treiber and Valenzuela moved ahead one base. Massei, who pinch hit for Ashlee Nunes, belted a ball into shallow left field to bring the winning run across for a final score of 4-3.

With the split, San Diego moves to 21-23 overall and 9-9 in PCSC action while the Lions move to 28-20 on the season and 8-7 in the PCSC.

In game one, San Diego was down 5-0 going into the third inning. The Toreros scored three runs cutting the Lions lead to two runs, 5-3. USD picked up a fourth run in the sixth inning when LMU responded in the seventh taking a two run lead, 6-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, San Diego made a rally attempt only to fall short dropping the game 5-6.

Defensively for the Toreros, Erin Harmonson moves to 10-12 on the season after striking out two batters in two innings of work. Christina Haake struck out four batters in 7.1 innings of work and remains at 6-9.

Offensively for USD, Kathleen Bonja hit a combined 4-for-6 (.667) on the day with two RBI, and one run scored. Mason finished 2-for-5 (.400) with one run scored.

The Toreros return to action Sunday, May 7 at noon at the USD Softball Complex for the second half of their series with Lions. Prior to the first pitch, San Diego will honor the seniors from both LMU and USD in a brief ceremony.
