SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Amy Mahinalani DeGroot and Ali Troost pace the 17th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) win over Loyola Marymount University in a West Coast Conference match Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 16-3 overall, move to 6-1 in the WCC and have now won four consecutive matches. With the loss, the Lions fall to 12-9 overall and 2-5 in the WCC.
DeGroot led all players with her 17 kills on 31 attempts, while committing five errors to post a .387 attack percentage. Troost was the second USD player in double digit kills as she had 10 on 20 attempts to post a .400 attack percentage. Andrea Csaszi had a match-best 16 digs and Jessica Nyrop recorded 28 assists, wile helping direct the USD offense to a .337 attack percentage.
In the first set, San Diego grabbed the early momentum, as a LMU service error sparked a 6-3 run that was capped on a Colleen Carlson kill off a set from Nyrop. LMU then battled with the Toreros back and forth a bit, and never trailed by more than three. Then with the score at 14-12 in favor of USD, a LMU service error sparked a 6-1 Torero run that was capped on a Nyrop service ace to give USD a comfortable 20-14 lead. USD never looked back as they cruised their way to a 25-17 win.
In the second set, the Toreros continued the momentum from the first set, as they opened the frame with a 7-2 run that was sparked on a LMU attack error and bookended on a DeGroot kill. USD would then use a 9-4 run to gain complete control of the momentum and take a commanding 16-6 lead. Again, USD never lost control of the momentum and cruised their way to a 25-17 win again.
In the third and final set, a DeGroot kill sparked a 5-0 run for the Toreros to begin the set. The Lions then went on a 6-1 run to even the score at 6-6. After the two teams sea sawed back and forth a bit and with the score knotted at 9-9, a Troost kill ignited an 11-4 USD run that gave the Toreros the momentum they would need to close out the match with a 25-18 win.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday as they head to the Pacific Northwest to take on the University of Portland in a 7 p.m. match.
