SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore right side Ali Troost paced the 16th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-18) West Coast Conference win over the University of Portland Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 12-2 overall and move to 2-0 in the WCC. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 5-12 overall and 0-2 in the WCC.
Troost led all players with her season-high 18 kills on 35 attempts and hit for a .343 clip. The second Torero in double digit kills was Amy Mahinalani DeGroot, who had 15 kills on 39 swings to hit for a .308 clip. Jessica Nyrop recorded a double-double with a match-best 41 assists and added in 13 digs. Andrea Csaszi recorded a match-best 14 digs. As a team, USD hit for a .230 clip.
The Pilots stunned the Toreros by capturing the first set 25-19. Portland took advantage of several USD miscues in the early going as they jumped out to a 10-3 lead. San Diego then went on a 12-5 run sparked on a Troost kill and capped on a DeGroot kill to even things up at 15-15. The Pilots then went on a 5-0 run to regain control of the momentum and never looked back.
In the second set, the Pilots and Toreros kept it a close battle from the get-go with each team taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two. Then with the score knotted at 15-15, a Troost service ace ignited an 8-3 San Diego run that was capped on a Portland attack error to give USD a 23-18 lead. San Diego would capture set two by a final of 25-20.
In the third set, the Toreros and Pilots were in a close nit battle in the beginning, then with the score knotted at 12-12, a DeGroot kill off a set from Nyrop sparked a 9-1 run to give USD a comfortable 21-14 lead. The Toreros never looked back as they took the third set by a final of 25-17.
In the fourth and final set, the Pilots took an early 3-1 lead, but San Diego put together a 7-2 run tat was ignited on a Jillian Wolpman kill and capped on a Jaimarie Sutherland service ace to give them all the momentum and a 8-5 lead. San Diego never relinquished the lead as they claimed the match with a 25-18 lead.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they head to San Francisco for a 1 p.m. WCC match at War Memorial Gym.
