With the win, the Toreros improve to 18-3 overall, move to 8-1 in the WCC and increase their winning streak to six. With the loss, the Zags fall to 9-17 overall and 2-7 in the WCC.
Troost led all players with her 12 kills on 17 swings, while only committing three errors to post a .529 attack percentage. Amy Mahinalani DeGroot had 10 kills and hit for a .421 clip and the final USD player in double digit kills was Colleen Carlson, who also had 10 kills and hit for an impressive .588 clip. Jessica Nyrop recorded a double-double as she had 40 assists and had 12 digs, while helping direct USD to a season-best .494 attack percentage.
In the first set, San Diego came out hitting on all cylinders, as they opened the frame with a 10-2 run that was sparked on a Torey Ellick kill and capped on a Carlson kill off a set from Nyrop. After GU took back one point, USD went on a 10-3 run that was ignited on a Ashton Basch kill and capped on a Nyrop and Ellick block to give USD all the control of the set and a 20-6 lead. USD never looked back as they cruised their way to a 25-10 win.
In the second set, San Diego opened the frame with a 7-2 run that was highlighted by four consecutive Troost kills to cap the run. The Zags then took back two points, but that only set off a 9-2 USD run to give the Toreros a 15-4 advantage. The Toreros never let up as they continued that momentum and eased their way to a 25-13 win.
In the third and final set, USD again opened the frame with a 7-2 run as a GU service error began the set and the run was book ended on a Carlson solo block. The Bulldogs then made things interesting as they put together a 8-5 run to pull back to within three at 13-10, but San Diego kept the pedal to the medal and never let GU get any closer than three for the remainder of the set, as they claimed the match with a 25-20 win.
USD will return to action on Saturday as they battle the University of San Francisco for first place in the WCC at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
