PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of San Diego Toreros suffered their third straight conference loss as they fall from first place in the conference standings. The Toreros are currently at 6-9-3 and 6-4-0 overall in the WCC while the Pilots improve to 8-9-2 and 5-6-0 in the WCC.
Both teams played a physical match as the Toreros took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the seventh minute. J.D. Penilton went top shelf with a header off a feed from Corey Norris. Norris set up Penilton with a soft, floating service that was perfectly placed in front of the UP net.
Portland responded immediately as junior Collen Warner posted the equalizer less than two minutes later. Knapp sent a pass to Warner right up the middle of the field, just outside the box. Warner then finished with a low shot just inside the right post from 20 yards out tying the match at 1-1.
San Diego let the tie slip away before the half when Hosseinmardi gave Portland a 2-1 lead. Hosseinmardi took a feed from Warner and fired off a shot towards the far post from the far side. The shot nearly bounced out as it hit the post on its way into the back of the net but the ball settled in for a 2-1 Portland lead.
With Portland still leading 2-1 in the 54th minute, San Diego's Tim Grey picked up his second yellow card of the match, meaning the Toreros would have to play a man-down the rest of the way.
Portland took advantage with a long distance shot from Lopez with the Toreros down a man. Lopez had possession on the near side past USD defenders and buried a shot in the top-right corner of the net from 25 yards out. The Pilots extended their lead 3-1.
The Toreros made things interesting with a goal from Andrew Feld in the 67th minute. Feld cleared a shot from 20 yards out in a comeback attempt cutting the Pilot lead 3-2. However USD was unable to put away the tying shot to send it to overtime.
Guerrero finished with three saves on 20 San Diego shots. Briones countered with four stops on 15 attempts from Portland. The Pilots finished with a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
San Diego will finish their season at home this weekend when they face San Francisco on Friday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. followed by Santa Clara on Sunday, November 16 at 1:00 p.m. both at Torero Stadium.
