SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Four University of San Diego women's basketball players recorded double figures paced by Amanda Rego's game-high 20 points to help lead the Toreros to a 66-53 win over Santa Clara University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 14-11 overall, move to 5-6 in the WCC and have now won five of their last six games. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 18-8 overall and 7-4 in the WCC.
Rego led all players with her 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor, and she pulled down eight rebounds. Amber Sprague was the second USD player in double figures as she recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Child chipped in 14 points on a 6-for-12 performance from the field and Morgan Henderson was the final USD player in double figures as she had 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds. As a team, USD shot 44 percent from the field and out rebounded the Broncos 43-27.
In the first half, the two teams sea sawed back an forth over the first several minutes of action with both teams taking their turn with the lead, and neither having a lead bigger than three. Then with the score knotted up at 17-17 with 7:39 to go, back-to-back lay-ups by Rego sparked a 13-3 USD run that was capped on a Sprague jumper to give USD a 30-20 advantage with 4:28 remaining in the half. The Toreros would hang on to the lead and take a 36-27 advantage going into the break.
In the second half, the Toreros continued to keep the momentum on their side, but the Broncos wouldn't allow USD to take too big of a lead as Santa Clara would keep the deficit to single-digits for a majority of the half. Then with the score at 49-40, a pair of Sprague free throws gave USD a double-digit lead that they would not look back on. The Toreros would go on to build their lead up to as many as 16 at 64-48 with 1:20 to go on a pair of Rego free throws, before settling for a 13-point win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against Saint Mary's at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. This will be the final regular-season home game for the Toreros, as they conclude the season on the road next week, before returning for the WCC tournament in two weeks at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
