SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team posted a 6-4 loss to the Herd of Marshall University in game one of day two at the USD Invitational Saturday morning from the USD Softball Complex.
The Toreros were able to keep the game close throughout the first three innings down 3-2. Then in the fourth and fifth innings, Marshall combined for three runs taking a 6-2 lead over San Diego. San Diego's defense held off the Herd for two innings giving them a shot at a rally, and they got that chance in the bottom of the seventh.
Keely Helbock took base after being hit by a pitch. Nichole Valenzuela grounded out on a fielder's choice to first base allowing Helbock to move to second base. Carey Casciola reached on an error by the shortstop giving Helbock the opportunity to advance to third. Kathleen Bonja then grounded out to the shortstop which put Casciola in scoring position at second base. A Marshall wild pitch brought Helbock across home plate. Lindsey Fleet singled up the middle scoring Casciola and tallying an RBI and cutting the lead 4-6. However the Toreros were unable to push across the tying run as Marshall took the win.
The 2008 USD Invitational will continue Sunday morning when USD will face Colorado State in game two scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
