SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team fell to crosstown rival San Diego State 7-3 Tuesday night at the SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs even the series for 2008 at 1-1 with the victory.
The Toreros matched the Aztecs hit-for-hit and error-for-error as both teams recorded eight hits and two errors.
The Aztecs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning taking advantage of a Torero error. SDSU tacked on a second run in the third inning taking a 2-0 lead. Later in the fifth inning, San Diego state posted five more runs with the help of an Aztec grand slam in right field.
In the seventh inning, USD rallied with on out when Carey Casciola doubled to centerfield. Celeste Soto then hit a RBI single to left field pushing Casciola home cutting the lead to 7-1. Lindsey Fleet gave the Toreros a boost as she sent a shot over centerfield for a two-RBI homerun as USD gained ground 7-3. The Toreros had runners on first and second with two outs when the inning ended and a ground out to second base.
Kathleen Bonja finished the night 3-for-4. Carey Casciola finished 1-for-4 with one double and one run scored. Lindsey Fleet finished 1-for-4 with one homerun, one run scored and two RBI.
The Toreros return to the confines of home after a weekend off when they face Cal State San Marcos in a single game at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27.
