Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 11th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (7-6) downed the two-time defending national champion Oregon State University Beavers (4-5) 10-5 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at USD's Cunningham Stadium.

San Diego again wasted no time in scoring as for the third consecutive game, the Toreros scored a run in the first inning. The USD run came on a Victor Sanchez run-scoring double.

USD would then tack on one more run in the second inning on a Sean Nicol ground out which scored Zach Walters, who had singled, to push USD's lead to 2-0.

After the Beavers tied things up with one run in each of the third and fourth innings, USD regained the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Kevin Muno got things started with a stand-up double and he moved to third on a stolen base. Josh Romanski then walked and Sanchez drove in Muno as he hit the ball to the shortstop, who then bobbled the ball, to allow Sanchez to safely reach first on the error. USD then loaded the bases when Logan Gelbrich was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Anthony Strazzara drove in the next runs on a single to give USD a 5-2 lead.

The Beavers then responded with a three-run sixth inning to tie things up again. The OSU runs came on an Erik Ammon RBI single, a Chris Hopkins sacrifice fly and a Joey Wong RBI single.

San Diego then scored five unanswered runs over the next two innings to give USD a 10-5 win.

Offensively for the Toreros, Sanchez led the way as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Ricardo Pecina (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.0 innings of work. Blake Keitzman (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Beavers as he allowed one run on one hit in 0.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. non-conference game against Loyola Marymount at Point Loma Nazarene.
